Advancing Legal Protections for Women and Girls in West Africa

How strategic litigation, policy advocacy, and community paralegal training are dismantling institutional impunity across the region.

Advancing Legal Protections for Women and Girls in West Africa

Across West Africa, legal frameworks surrounding gender-based violence (GBV) are experiencing pivotal transformation. Through collective civil society mobilization, Voices Against Violence Africa (VAV Africa) has engaged regional lawmakers to reform penal codes and establish specialized survivor protection benches.

Bridging the Gap Between Legislation and Enforcement

Passing protective statutes is only the initial hurdle. The true test of human rights governance lies in implementation at the community level. In partnership with local judicial institutions, our paralegal initiatives have trained over 450 community leaders to provide immediate legal first-aid to survivors.

"Justice is not abstract; it must be felt by every woman and child who walks through a village courthouse seeking sanctuary."

Key Milestones

  • Established rapid-response legal aid clinics across 4 nations.
  • Published comprehensive comparative analysis on regional domestic violence legislation.
  • Trained law enforcement personnel on trauma-informed evidence preservation.

Moving forward into 2026, VAV Africa will scale its courtroom advocacy programs to ensure legal accountability is accessible to every marginalized community.
